Back to how and when to mulch story, each mulch choice has a different effect on the status of health of the plant and the improved aesthetics of your landscape. If we leave he everlasting debate of how and when to mulch aside all plants and soils will benefit from a properly conducted mulching application.
How Mulch Works:

Covering the ground around plants is the first mission. This will help

- regulate the roper moisture level of the soil. As we indicated in an earlier article the evaporation can be reduced by 50%decrease compared to bare soils.
- natural weed control is another benefit of mulch
- stabilize the temperature
- color choice will have an impact on how the sunlight is going to be either absorbed or reflected.
- the lighter the mulch helps in reflecting heat
- dark mulches have the propensity to create more heat from the sun and release it during the night.

One of the most important parts is when should one mulch?

In spring one should apply mulch only after all seasonal plants have emerged. All varieties of woody plants and any kind of tree should have (up to its drip line) one to two inches of non-compacted mulch applied. This practice should be especially heeded for younger or freshly transplanted trees and woody plants.

The question of how and when should one mulch needs a few more answer here.

- one should mulch anytime one creates another bed to prevent soil erosion and for al the reasons covered in the first mission above.
- fall and early winter is another time to apply mulch to prevent excessive frost damage to our favorite plants
- smaller amounts of mulch can be applied up to three times a year to maintain and or improved aesthetics of your landscape
